ProjectX provides navigation solutions for coastal sailors and passage makers.
Project X is a robust military grade, waterproof Android tablet, capable of being used for extended periods in the roughest of seas. We add OpenCPN and additional extra software tailored to your requirements that you can use for navigating in the South Pacic and provide you with dedicated training on its use.
Charts in the South West Pacic are not reliable. Many areas have not been accurately surveyed and some depth soundings even come from Captain Cook's data. Charted hazards can be up to 600 metres out in some places, navigation marks can be missing or in the wrong spot, depths are incorrect and the data is generally unreliable. The Raymarine chart plotter prominently marks SonarCharts as “Not for Navigation,” Navico (B&G/Simrad/Lawrence) state “Navigational features that appear in this document are not a substitute for proper training and prudent seamanship. They do not replace a human navigator and SHOULD NOT be relied on as a sole or primary source of navigation. Numerous vessels run aground each season with damage ranging from keel and bilge damage, to total loss. Easy access to the appropriate satellite imagery at the helm would have helped to prevent these issues.
The use of satellite imagery for coastal or passage navigation is no longer a luxury, it ’s a necessity. The manufactures of traditional navigation products (Raymarine/Navico etc.) are lagging when it comes to low cost, robust solutions which leverage current technology and trends.
