Northland Regional Council (NRC) is the regional authority responsible for managing and protecting Northland’s natural environment, including the region’s extensive coastline and harbours.
We are responsible for a variety of roles when it comes to caring for Northland's coast. This includes preparing the Regional Coastal Plan, monitoring the coastal environment, maritime safety, oil spill response, and supporting community restoration projects.
We have two marine protected areas to safeguard vulnerable marine ecosystems. These areas – Mimiwhangata and Rakaumangamanga– have been designated as Rahui Tapu ‘no-take’ zones to halt ecological decline caused by overfishing and restore biodiversity.
Fishing and collecting shellfish is prohibited in these areas, with exceptions for kina (a species of spiny sea urchin), customary fishing rights under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, research and restoration. We also restrict some commercial fishing methods around Cape Brett to further protect marine life. These measures aim to reverse the loss of key species such as snapper and crayfish, and to restore balance to ecosystems.
NRC works in partnership with iwi, hapu, and local communities to monitor the health of these areas and ensure compliance.
