I am a marine professional with extensive experience in yacht engineering, refit management, and technical operations. Combining this expertise I am now specialising in small craft surveys and project management through Searad Marine.

My background as a Naval Officer, superyacht engineer, and liveaboard sailor provides a deep, practical understanding of vessel systems and seaworthiness. Having spent my career maintaining, rebuilding, and operating complex yachts, I approach surveying with the mindset of both an engineer and an owner.

My goal is to provide clear, honest assessments that help clients make confident, informed decisions: whether purchasing a yacht, preparing for a voyage, or planning maintenance.

Professional Strengths

  • Comprehensive Technical Knowledge – Skilled across mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, developed through years of hands-on marine engineering.
  • Refit & Project Management – Experienced in coordinating refits and upgrades on yachts up to 45m, liaising closely with surveyors, contractors, and owners.
  • Structural Awareness – In-depth understanding of GRP, aluminium, and steel construction, gained through direct engineering and inspection experience. ● Seaworthiness & Safety – Former Royal New Zealand Navy Officer trained in navigation, watchkeeping, and operational safety in demanding maritime environments.
  • Client-Focused Reporting – Reports and inspections are concise, visual, and prioritised around safety, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Liveaboard Insight – Years of living aboard with my family have provided real-world experience of the systems, maintenance, and reliability challenges yacht owners face.

Relevant Experience Marine Project Manager

Developed advanced fault-finding and troubleshooting skills in remote environments with limited external support. Marine Project Manager (Electrical)
  • Offshore Project, Germany Led a team of 20 electricians conducting electrical modifications and vessel surveys on offshore construction support vessels. Oversaw compliance and inspection processes in a high-pressure, multinational project environment. Officer of the Watch
  • Royal New Zealand Navy Bridge Watchkeeping Officer and Navigator aboard RNZN vessels. Trained as a Helicopter Approach Controller and responsible for navigation, safety, and team leadership during operations, refits, and trials.
  • Liveaboard Sailor – Global Full-time liveaboard sailor with extensive ocean passage and maintenance experience. Responsible for vessel preparation, repair, and upkeep while operating independently across remote regions. This lifestyle provides continuous, practical familiarity with vessel condition assessment, system reliability, and owner priorities.

Approach

My approach to surveying is grounded in technical competence, integrity, and real-world experience. I aim to build confidence for every client through clear communication and honest reporting. I understand the pressures of vessel ownership, whether managing refits or preparing for long-term cruising, and tailor my service to deliver practical, reliable advice in an easily understandable format. Each inspection reflects both engineering precision and an appreciation for how yachts are lived on, worked on, and trusted at sea.

Searad Marine surveys are conducted with integrity, accuracy, and genuine care for the people and vessels that make up our maritime community.
